Why We Build WordPress Sites Without Page Builders (And Why It Matters for Your Business)

Your website looks fine. So why isn’t it working?

We hear some version of this all the time. A small business owner paid for a website a couple of years ago. It looks decent. But it loads slowly on phones, it barely shows up on Google, and every time a plugin updates, something on the homepage breaks.

Nine times out of ten, when we look under the hood, we find the same thing: a page builder.

At Ash & Anchor Digital, we build every WordPress site from scratch, with clean custom code and no page builders. That’s not a gimmick or a purity test. It’s a decision we made because of what we’ve seen happen to small businesses stuck with sites that were quick to build and hard to live with. Here’s why.

First, what’s a page builder?

A page builder is a drag-and-drop plugin that sits on top of WordPress. Elementor, Divi, and WPBakery are the big names. Instead of writing code, you drag boxes, images, and buttons onto a canvas until the page looks right.

It’s easy to see why they’re popular. They let someone with no coding background put together a site in a weekend. They let agencies crank out sites fast and cheap. For a hobby blog or a quick test page, they’re honestly fine.

The trouble starts when a real business depends on that site to bring in customers, year after year.

The hidden costs of “easy”

1. Speed

Page builders load their own scripts, styles, and layout code on every page, whether that page needs them or not. A simple headline can end up wrapped in five or six layers of extra markup. Visitors feel that as lag, especially on a phone with one bar of signal. And people don’t wait. If your site takes too long to load, they hit the back button and call your competitor instead.

2. Search rankings

Google measures how fast and stable your pages are and factors that into where you show up. Bloated code makes it harder to score well. You can install a caching plugin to paper over it, but you’re treating the symptom, not the cause.

3. Lock-in

Here’s the one most owners don’t find out about until it’s too late. Your content lives inside the page builder’s own format. If you ever turn the builder off, or want to switch to something else, your pages turn into a mess of shortcodes and broken layouts. Moving on usually means rebuilding from scratch anyway.

4. Update roulette

A page-builder site depends on WordPress, the builder, the builder’s add-ons, and the theme all playing nicely together. When one of them updates, something else can break. That’s how a Tuesday morning plugin update turns into a contact form that quietly stops sending leads.

5. It’s harder to make it yours

Page builders make common layouts easy and anything unusual hard. When your business needs something specific, like a custom quote form, a service-area map, or a booking flow that matches how you actually work, you end up fighting the tool.

What “custom WordPress” means at Ash & Anchor

You still get WordPress: the world’s most popular website platform. What changes is everything underneath.

  • Built from scratch. We write the theme ourselves, so every line of code is there for a reason. No leftover features you’ll never use.
  • Fast by default. Lean code means quick load times without stacking up optimization plugins to compensate.
  • SEO baked in. Clean structure, proper headings, and technical SEO set up from day one, not bolted on after launch.
  • We handle the changes. Need to update your hours, add a service, or swap a photo? Just reach out and we’ll take care of it, so you can stay focused on running your business.
  • Fewer moving parts. Fewer plugins means fewer things to break when updates roll out, and fewer security holes to worry about.
  • It’s yours. Your content isn’t trapped in a proprietary format. If you ever want to take your site somewhere else, you can.

We’re a small, husband-and-wife, veteran-owned team based in New Braunfels, Texas, working with businesses nationwide. That means when you work with us, you’re talking to the people actually building your site, not an account manager passing notes down the line.

Is a custom site right for you?

We’ll be straight with you: not every business needs one. If you’re testing an idea, or you just need a simple placeholder page for a few months, a DIY builder might be all you need.

A custom WordPress site makes sense when:

  • Your website is a main source of new leads or customers
  • You care about showing up in local and organic search
  • Your current site is slow, fragile, or a pain to update
  • You need features that fit how your business actually runs
  • You want a site that will last years, not get rebuilt every 18 months

If a few of those sound familiar, it’s worth a conversation.
