Ash & Anchor Digital graphic: Is your website turning customers away? 7 red flags small business owners should know

Let’s be honest.

You probably don’t look at your small business website the same way your customers do.

You know your business.

You know what you offer.

You know where you’re located.

You know how to get in touch.

You know why someone should choose you.

Your customer doesn’t.

They’re seeing your website for the first time and they’re making a decision about your business in a matter of seconds.

So here’s the uncomfortable question:

If you were a brand-new customer who knew absolutely nothing about your business, would your website convince you to stick around?

Not your mom. πŸ˜‚

Not your best friend.

Not you, because you already know how great your business is.

A stranger.

Let’s see.

7 Red Flags Your Small Business Website Might Have

🚩 Red Flag #1: People Have to Figure Out What You Do

This sounds obvious, but it happens all the time.

Someone lands on your homepage and sees a beautiful photo, your logo, and clever tagline…

…but they still don’t know what you actually do.

Your website shouldn’t make people solve a puzzle.

Within a few seconds, visitors should be able to understand:

What do you do? Who do you help? Where do you serve?

If those answers aren’t immediately clear, you’ve already made your customer work too hard.

And people are busy.

They’re not sticking around to decode your website.

🚩 Red Flag #2: Finding Your Phone Number Feels Like a Scavenger Hunt

You want people to call you.

So…why is your phone number hiding?

If a customer has to scroll through your entire website, open your contact page, or dig through your footer just to find out how to reach you, that’s a problem.

The same goes for:

  • Booking links
  • Contact forms
  • Business hours
  • Your location
  • Request-a-quote buttons

Don’t hide the door and then wonder why nobody walks through it.

Make it easy.

🚩 Red Flag #3: Your Website Looks Great…On Your Computer

Then you pull it up on your phone.

😬

The text is tiny.

The buttons are awkward.

The photos are cut off.

You have to zoom in and out.

Something doesn’t look quite right.

Here’s the thing:

Your customers don’t care what your website looks like on your computer.

They care what it looks like on their phone.

Your website needs to work where your customers are actually using it-not just where you built it.

🚩 Red Flag #4: Your Website Looks like Your Business Closed in 2021

You know what I’m talking about.

Old photos.

Old services.

Old promotions.

Old hours.

A blog post from three years ago saying, “we’re excited for what’s coming in 2023!”

Except it’s not 2023.

Your website doesn’t need to be redesigned every six months.

But it does need to reflect the business you’re running today.

If your business has grown, changed locations, added services, changed its branding, or simply evolved, your website should tell that story.

Because an outdated website can accidentally send the message:

“Is this business even still open?”

🚩 Red Flag #5: Everything Is About You

Okay, hear me out.

Your customers absolutely want to know about your business.

But they aren’t visiting your website because they’re curious about your favorite color or your entire entrepreneurial life story.

They’re there because they have a problem and they’re wondering if you can solve it.

Instead of only saying:

“We have been serving the community for 15 years…”

Show them why that matters to them.

Instead of:

“We offer residential and commercial landscaping…”

Try explaining what that means for the customer.

Beautiful yards. Less work. Reliable service. One less thing on their plate.

Your website should answer the question every customer is silently asking:

“What’s in it for me?”

🚩 Red Flag #6: You Never Actually Ask Them to Do Anything

This one is sneaky.

Your website can be beautiful.

Your photos can be amazing.

Your services can be clearly explained.

And your customer can still leave without contacting you.

Why?

You never told them what to do next.

Don’t assume they’ll figure it out.

Give them a next step.

Need a quote? Request one.

Have questions? Contact us.

Ready to schedule? Book today.

A good call-to-action isn’t pushy.

It’s helpful.

You’re simply showing your customer where to go next.

🚩 Red Flag #7: Your Website Doesn’t Make You Feel Trustworthy

Put yourself in your customer’s shoes for a minute.

You need to hire someone you’ve never met.

You find two businesses online.

Business #1 has a professional website, clear information, recent photos, reviews, an easy way to contact them, and tells you exactly what to expect.

Business #2 has a Facebook page, an outdated website, no clear contact information, and a phone number that doesn’t work.

Which one are you calling?

Exactly.

Your website doesn’t have to be fancy.

It needs to make people feel confident.

“These people know what they’re doing.”

“This looks legitimate.”

“I feel comfortable reaching out.”

That’s what good web design should accomplish.

Now Be Honest…

How many of those red flags did you recognize?

One?

Three?

Maybe all seven?

Don’t panic.

Recognizing the problem is actually the first step toward fixing it.

And here’s something a lot of business owners forget:

Your website isn’t supposed to be finished forever.

Your business changes.

Your customers change.

Technology changes.

Your website should be able to change with you.

Sometimes that means a few updates.

Sometimes it means a complete redesign.

And sometimes it means finally getting the professional website you’ve been putting off for the last three years.

Whatever the case may be, your website should be doing more than taking up space on the internet.

It should be helping your business.

So here’s the question:

If a stranger found your business today, would your website give them a reason to stay?

If the answer is “I’m not sure,” it might be time to take another look.

At Ash & Anchor Digital, we believe your website should look like your business, sound like your brand, and make it easy for the right customers to take the next step.

Because your business works hard.

Your website should too. βš“
